“A magnificent and unique striking with an exemplary provenance, uncirculated, the obverse brilliantly so” in NGC ‘Waterbird’ holder, graded MS65BN (Cert# 4861781-002)

Provenance
SNC, September 1985, no. 5912 – ‘dark tone, unique, virtually mint state – £15,000
C W Peck, collection dispersed through SNC from 1969
Dr E C Carter, collection purchased by Baldwin, 1950
M P W Boulton, Sotheby, 1-2 April 1912, lot 136 (part) – ‘Proofs, by Küchler (3), of the Penny, 1806 (unbronzed), 1807 (bronzed), and 1808 (unbronzed): all with grained edges, extremely fine, and the last an extremely rare and unpublished date‘ – £12.10.0 (Spink)

‘The reverse is from an ordinary current 1807 die. As the last figure of the date shows no sign of alteration from a 6 or a 7, a new working die must have been specially made, and this would explain the proof-like surface of the obverse. It is in red mint condition, and although, like the current pennies, it has the edge deeply grooved and the rev. it is unlikely that it was issued for currency. weight 292.8gr. ‘
